GHE comes 2nd in the ESMA’s!

A huge thank you to all that voted for me in the Equestrian Social Media Awards. GHE managed a very respectable 2nd place!!!!!. It’s lovely to have such great support even though I’m just an amateur it’s really heart warming to know so many people enjoy the blog. Wishing you all good luck for the forthcoming season, and if you fancy watching the awards ceremony check out the video below (about 2mins 30 sec in)

Dustry takes life 1 step at a time…

…and in reverse! Tonight as I was filling haynets and making feeds Dustry took it upon him self to find something entertaining to do. I couldn’t quite believe my eyes as I watched him reverse back up, and onto the mounting block. He was very careful about measuring the step with his toes and making sure he got his feet ‘just so’ on the step then he proceeded to stand there resting a leg, and looking pleased with himself until I went over and spoiled his fun by telling him to get down, and behave like a normal horse! I hoping it’s just ‘a phase he’s going…

‘Ambassador with this Protexin discount code you’re really spoiling us’

My long time sponsors Protexin Equine Premium have introduced an ambassador scheme, and have asked a select group of riders, owners, amateurs, and pros who use their products to be ambassadors. In short this means that I can help spread the word about Protexin and their products, which is a great way for me to be able to do something for my sponsor in return. One of the other benefits of being an ambassador is being able to use the following discount code to get 10% off all Protexin equine products ordered online! Enter Code : ZAMM0001 at the checkout for 10% Off…

Dustry aka ‘Shergar’

One of the things I love about ex-racers is being able to trace their breeding, race history, and past life due to the many records kept throughout a racehorse’s career. I’ve also found that every trainer I’ve ever contacted when it comes to requesting info about a horse has been really helpful. With Dustry I have been very lucky to have made contact with people who knew him when he was at stud before going to the yearling sales, and because he came from a local race yard I also know all his racing history first hand from his dedicated…

Lesson report – freezing but fruitful

This weekend I finally managed to book Dustry in for a lesson after all the snow, frozen arenas, slippy roads, and other obstacles in our way it was his first lesson since before Christmas. I have been religiously schooling him after work during the week, either lunging on side reins or riding, but without any ‘eyes on the ground’ it can feel a bit like you are literally and metaphorically riding in the dark! As a result I think he had got a little ‘mincey’ and not forward enough in his trot work. I need to get him to work lower in…

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – Going Home

This year to try and give GHE readers a bit more insight about my sponsors, and the life of a sponsored amateur rider I am going to run a monthly ‘Sponsor Spotlight’ feature. We kick off with my newest sponsor the not-for profit racehorse rehabilitation organisation Going Home. The idea is that ‘Sponsor Spotlight’ will give people a little overview about each sponsor, what they do, and how our sponsorship agreement works. There’s also a Q&A section where I have tried my journalistic best to ask some interesting and probing questions! Enjoy… About Going Home… “Going Home” is a not for profit horse re-homing…

C H E C K – this out!

You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to source dark green and white chequered fabric! Finally after hours of scouring the internet eBay came up with the goods and I found some cotton with the right pattern on. It arrived yesterday and it’s a P E R F E C T match with my xc top, I’m as chuffed as a chuffed thing! So my grand plans are to firstly make myself a stock to match my xc colours, and then have a little think about how to employ the off cuts…..I was thinking maybe a hat bag?….or….some kind of head-collar accessory…..not sure….I’m waiting for a flash of…

Spring Cleaning!

Well ok so It’s not technically spring yet, but I have ‘spring cleaning fever’, and with both horses currently out of action (Soap is on his holidays, and Dustry is ‘off games’ at the mo’ whilst a cut on his leg heals!) I have turned my attention to my tack. I tend to only really clean my tack before competitions and after is has been used in muddy/wet conditions so this was a bit of a treat for my leather work! Over the years I have picked up a few tips when it comes to cleaning tack, nothing ground breaking or…

A Christmas gift from Kan Teq

My lovely sponsor Kan Teq sent me a Christmas parcel which after a little investigative rattling, sniffing, and squeezing went under the tree to be opened on Christmas day! Wendy at Kan Teq has her own horses and understands the needs of ‘horsey ladies’ and had sent me some lovely toiletries including that god send Neutrogena hand cream, lip balm for chapped winter lips, polos for the ponies, chocolate money and a few more lovely goodies for me! The best part of my little Christmas bundle though was a new medical armband cover for my Kan! I think medical arm…
