Lesson report – freezing but fruitful

This weekend I finally managed to book Dustry in for a lesson after all the snow, frozen arenas, slippy roads, and other obstacles in our way it was his first lesson since before Christmas. I have been religiously schooling him after work during the week, either lunging on side reins or riding, but without any ‘eyes on the ground’ it can feel a bit like you are literally and metaphorically riding in the dark! As a result I think he had got a little ‘mincey’ and not forward enough in his trot work. I need to get him to work lower in his neck position to make sure he builds up the correct muscles, and I MUST stop fixing my elbows!

I managed to convince my ‘camera man’ to come along and film these antics the results of which you can watch below…

Once we got started, and the cob webs had been blown away we both got cracking, and I think he started to work really well in the end. I could feel a lot more contact in my hand which made it much easier to keep him straight and working over himself. I will work on all our lesson homework over the week in prep for another lesson next weekend. After a few weeks I think he should be ready for his dressage debut!
